Did you know October 15th is Global Handwashing Day? This day is dedicated to increasing awareness and understanding of just how vital handwashing is in our everyday lives.

How can a simple task like handwashing be so important? Have you ever noticed when one person in the office gets sick, it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the office follows suit? The joke around the PSI office is that anyone with kids still in school is usually the carrier. Talking about you, Craig and Rayanna.

Handwashing: The More You Know

Handwashing among school-age children is especially important. There are an estimated 22-million school days lost every year due to the common cold. And the adult population is equally as guilty on the germ-spreading front. Think about time lost on job sites due to illness once the weather turns?

Scientists believe our hands may transmit up to 80% of all infections making handwashing a key to stopping the spread of disease and staying healthy. So while everyone is researching fancy precautions to avoid catching the newest superbug each season, the easy solution is right in front of us. Wash your hands.

Following these 5 steps is the most effective way to prevent the spread of germs:

  1. Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm or cold), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
  2. Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
  3. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the “Happy Birthday” song from beginning to end twice.
  4. Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
  5. Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

Handwashing for the Trades

Job sites just getting started with little or no plumbing have to look at alternatives since Step 1 isn’t an option. Hand sanitizer and wipes can be used when soap and water are not readily available. Oatey offers their Hercules for Hands brand of pre-moistened towels that require no water, scrubbing or rinsing, and provide immediate anti-bacterial action when jobs get dirty.

When plumbing is available in a building, there may not be a more natural way to follow Steps 1 through 5 than by handwashing with Bradley Corporation products. Their solutions are available for schools, colleges, hospitals, museums, and so much more. Whether using their new WashBar technology or classic Washfountains, Bradley products ensure you’ll take on the day germ-free.

So if you just read this on your phone while taking a “breather” in the restroom, please, today of all days, make sure you head to the closest sink and wash your hands.
